Horowitz adapted the story from the first book in his own young adult series about 14-year-old Alex Rider (newcomer Pettyfer), who's basically a junior James Bond. Alex is orphaned and living with his spy uncle Ian (McGregor), who's quickly killed off, thus leaving Alex himself to be recruited by MI-6 boss Blunt (Nighy). Good thing the teen's already had all that special ops training. The villain is the ever-creepy Rourke, here playing some evil tycoon with a grudge, and Silverstone is Alex's helpful housekeeper, Jack. There's gadgets and action galore for the undemanding youngster while the adults can stick with Ian Fleming.
