The ever-charismatic, though now frail, O'Toole plays a mildly famous charmer of an actor who still takes an interest in a pretty girl, even if the flesh is weak. Maurice's best friend is his grumpy (and equally aged) fellow thespian Ian (Phillips). Ian's grand-niece Jessie (Whittaker) has ostensibly arrived to help him out but the sullen, lower-class teen is more concerned with her own interests. This doesn't prevent Maurice from becoming interested in her, though it might be more a nod to his rogue past than to Jessie herself. Funny and poignant without mawkishness; also notable is the appearance of Redgrave as Maurice's understanding ex-wife.
