Adultery in the 'burbs and a vulnerable sex offender on parole collide in Perrotta's adaptation of his 2004 novel. Bored outsider Sarah (Winslet) is with the other moms at the playground where handsome house husband Brad (Wilson) also plays with his son. A brief first meeting slowly leads to an affair, eventually discovered by Brad's successful wife Kathy (Connelly). Meanwhile, Brad's tightly wound, ex-cop buddy Larry (Emmerich) is on a mission to rid the neighborhood of ex-con Ronald (Haley), who's living with his doting mom (Somerville). Field drags things out too long but the performances are strong.
