A girl and her horse. Katy McLaughlin (Lohman) is happy to return to her family's struggling Wyoming ranch after having blown her year at boarding school. She would much rather help her traditionalist father, Rob (McGraw), breed quarter horses, although dad is leaning on her older brother Howard (Kwanten). Mom Nell (Bello) plays peacemaker. The situation worsens when Katy corrals and decides to tame the wild black stallion of the title. But when dad sells Flicka to the rodeo, Katy is determined to get the horse back. C-W singing star McGraw is a natural while the twentysomething Lohman can still easily pass for a big-hearted, hard-headed teen.
