Adaptation of Charles Bukowski's 1975 book of the same name is a bleak, darkly funny examination of ideals and ambivalence. Bukoswki's booze-soaked alter-ego Hank Chinaski (Dillon) lives by the slacker code with his series of changeable jobs and changeable women while he tends to his mediocre writing. Girlfriends Jan (Taylor) and Laura(Tomei) are excellent as Hank's enablers, but it's Dillon who brings style and swagger to a "man of many jobs" (a definition of the movie's title) who eschews soul-sucking opportunity and success in favor of being true to his distasteful, deep self.
