Advocate Paine looks at the history of the EV1, the first mass-produced electric automobile, introduced by General Motors in California in 1996 after the state passed legislation requiring automakers to make a portion of their vehicles with zero-emission engines. Despite protests, GM pulled the cars (which were only available by lease) in 2000, citing lack of consumer interest among other reasons. Paine uncovers the EV1's ultimate fate--crushed at GM's Nevada desert proving ground.
