Get high, Mr. Chips. Crackhead Brooklyn schoolteacher Dan Dunne (Gosling) manages to do the inspiring inner-city educator thing until 12-year-old Drey (Epps in a stellar debut performance), no stranger to addicts, discovers him passed out in a bathroom stall after a basketball game, pipe in hand. This leads to a tentative, complicated relationship between the two, with Dan's ironic efforts to save Drey from a drug dealer's plans to bring her into his fold somehow offering the pair the possibility of salvation. Gosling is raw and sympathetic portraying Dan's contradictions, and the film smartly avoids the usual feel-good trappings.
Outstanding Performances in a Great Film KHL at 2008-07-24 12:09:39
Ryan Gosling gives yet another amazing performance in this complicated film about inner city youth, education, and drugs. Sounds trite and simple, but this movie is anything but. Think of films like 'Traffic' or 'Requiem for a Dream' meets 'Dead Poets Society' or 'Finding Forrester' (with a darker edge). Gosling and Epps have a great chemistry and its hard to take your eyes off the screen when they interact. Well worth multiple viewings.
