In 1970s Argentina, Banderas is Carlos Rueda, a childrens' theater director whose journalist wife (Thompson) has disappeared after trying to investigate the fate of thousands of people who have been taken away by government agents. He soon discovers psychic abilities and is able to tell the fates of many of the victims, but is only able to divine obscure clues to his wife's disappearance. The introduction of the pshychic element is jarring to the political and personal story of the toll of totalitarian persecution, and derails the entire production.
