Unlike 1971's "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," this is not a musical, although the Oompa Loompas still sing. And Burton does a more faithful adaptation of the 1964 book by Roald Dahl. Poor boy Charlie Bucket (Highmore) is one of five winners of a golden ticket that allows him to tour the mysterious Willy Wonka's (Depp) chocolate factory. Fans of the original may have qualms, but this one has a little more depth and heart, great visuals, and the cooperation of Dahl's widow, an exec producer. Depp is brilliantly quirky and Highmore shines.

The book was great so the fact that this movie more closely resembles it was a welcome suprise. However, the original movie is an all-time family favorite so this one paled by comparison.
