The Trip

In 1973 Los Angeles, young Republican Alan Oakley (Sullivan) is working for an establishment newspaper and denying the fact that he's gay. In fact, Alan's writing a book that's a conservative attack on gay rights. When Alan meets gay rights activist Tommy (Braun), things change personally and professionally. Too bad Alan's manuscript gets published anonymously by envious wannabe lover, Peter (Baker). Film eventually makes its way to 1984 when Alan learns ex-lover Tommy is dying of AIDS in Mexico but would like to see Alan one more time. Not quite as sappy as you may think, since writer/director Swain is certainly sincere, but it's also basic melodrama.
