Walter Redlich (Ninidze), a German Jew, has fled Breslau for a job as a farm manager in British-colonized Kenya. In 1938, his wife Jettel (Koehler) and their 5-year-old daughter Regina (Kurka) join him. Jettel is unhappy with their harsh new life and isolation but Regina quickly adapts. When war is declared, Walter is briefly interned and eventually joins the British Army, leaving Jettel behind to manage things. As Regina (Eckertz) grows up, she becomes ever-more adapted to life in Kenya and is dismayed when, in 1947, her father is offered a prestigious job and wants to return "home" to Germany. German with subtitles. From the novel by Stefanie Zweig.
