On the DVD commentary track, director Jack Hill admits that he made this movie quickly to capitalize on the short-lived phenomenon of figure-8 racing, where the shape of the track guarantees many crashes. Brian Donlevy is the promoter who involves young racers Sid Haig and Dick Davalos in his plans.
