The Pledge
Retired Reno homicide detective Nicholson is obsessed with the unsolved murder of a little girl, which bares a resemblance to past unsolved child murders. Unconventional thriller's dark subject matter will no doubt dissuade some potential viewers, but Penn's third (and best) directorial outing is impressive, thanks in large part to Nicholson's subtle, intense work.
