A cross between Howard Hughes and Sherlock Holmes, brilliant, eccentric detective Daryl Zero (Pullman), who, along with his harried helper Steve Arlo (Stiller), takes on the case of a blackmailed timber tycoon (O'Neal) in this comedic whodunit. The normally reclusive sleuth bites the bullet and agrees to trek to Oregon to personally investigate the particularly intriguing case, which also involves an attractive paramedic (Dickens). Pullman pulls off another quirky leading man performance with flair. Stiller is stellar as the exasperated assistant. Fresh idea and hip humor mark this debut for 22-year-old writer/director Kasdan, son of director Lawrence Kasdan.

I saw this movie during it's very limited theatrical release, and almost instantly fell in love. The thing is full of quirky charm - wickedly funny with a nice dose of Sherlock Holmes and Encyclopedia Brown. Pullman is genius in the role of Darryl Zero. I wanted a whole series of Zero Investigations films. Underseen gem.
