The Karate Kid
Ingratiating, formulaic (too long) martial arts/family drama. Will Smith's kid, skinny and charismatic, takes on Ralph Macchio's role of the bullied boy learning how to defend himself, with Chan as his wise but eccentric mentor. Twelve-year-old Dre and his mom move to Beijing, China for her work and Dre is constantly (and brutally) beaten up by the school bullies. When he's rescued by quiet janitor Mr. Han, Dre wants to learn kung fu from this unassuming master. First he must learn discipline, focus, and inner strength before the big martial arts tournament.
