Lugosi, in his most famous role, plays a vampire who terrorizes the countryside in his search for human blood. From Bram Stoker's novel. Although short of a masterpiece due to slow second half, deservedly rated a film classic. What would Halloween be like without this movie? Sequelled by "Dracula's Daughter." The 1999 re-release was re-scored by Philip Glass and performed by the Kronos Quartet.
This classic seems stage bound in comparrison to the Spanisn version on the Universal Monsters Collection DVD.The Spanish version features more fluid camera work. Lugosi is the better Dracula, but the sets are the same in both versions.Edward Van Sloan is an imposing Van Helsing.David Manners and the rest of the cast do their best in this atmospheric but slow moving version of Bram Stokers novel. Both features are included on one DVD.
Three stars.
