Four grown siblings and their parents struggle with various levels of parenthood. From the college drop-out, to the nervous single mother, to the yuppie couple raising an overachiever, every possibility is explored, including the perspective from the older generation, portrayed by Robards. Genuinely funny with dramatic moments that work most of the time, with an affecting performance from Martin and Wiest. Director Howard has four kids and was inspired to make this film when on a European jaunt with them.
While not inclined to watch movies more than once or twice, I have sought this movie out time after time and have never been disappointed. All of the characters bring something original to the story and the performances are great. I have quoted the scene about the grandmother and the roller coaster more times than I can count.
