The American dream in "Rebel..." and in real life today, is unfettered acquisition of objects and money, with no soul or character. That's what the kids are rebelling against. I wish more kids today would rebel against soulless America with its greed and avarice. Day Trading

Nothing more than a typical western that clumsily tries to be more.

I'm not sure I understand the hype for this film. A complex character study? No way. The main flaw: John Wayne's racist, obsessed character, Ethan, is (at one point in the film) ready to shoot his niece for becoming "a buck" (think Dances with Wolves). Yet, near the end of the movie, as he's chasing her down, he suddenly decides to save her, and carry her off into the sunset. This is not characterization--it's a cop-out, the writer's way of saying "I'm too lazy to do anything else, so I'll throw this at the audience." It's frustrating as hell, considering the many great moments the movie had. The scene should've been fleshed-out, so that we can see some epiphany that Ethan comes to. Anyway, if you wanna see a good John Wayne western there's plenty other better ones you can watch.

James Dean...the son of Mr. Howell?? No wonder the boy had trouble respecting dear-old-dad. This movie broke down obstacles of teen life and laid them to waste. Natalie Wood, Dean and Sal Mineo....all tragically lost to us. A great part by future star, Dennis Hopper. This movie should not be missed...teen angst at it's best.

Redford and Wood...magical

I am biased about this movie and This Property is Condemned, because for favorite male and female actors are the stars. Wood is such a kooky, naive character and Redford is suave and experienced. A Pymalion-type movie with big twists in it. "You're Gonna Hear From Me"....this could be many a young starlet's theme song.

Two Films in One, Enjoy Both

I admit bias here, loved it in 1965. Years later, there are 2 films here: a 30 minute hysterical intro and the 2 hour race itself. The intro intimidates the latter race section, which is necessarily longer. But Lemmon's Professor Fate is a classic villain and well worth the time. You cannot find a more colorful film EVER. If I have a negative, I would cut 10 minutes of it along the way here and there. This film is a warm visit with a good friend.

When you put Natalie Wood and Robert Redford together, you've got a hit in my book. This is another movie that I could watch once a year. Excellent!
