Too much fun

The first time I watched Zombieland was one of the greatest 90 minutes of my life. There were maybe 10 minutes out of that bunch where I was not laughing and approximately 0 where I was not smiling. In Zombieland, some sort of unexplained (the best kind) apocalypse has left most of the world either dead or zombiefied, leaving very few humans left in the wreckage. These aren't slow zombies, these are lightning fast killers. We follow four terrific characters. Columbus is a skinny, OCD nerd who seems to have not had many friends in his life but is a heckuva zombie survivor. Tallahassee is the ultimate hilarious badass, a supremely pissed-off zombie killer who takes no #!@%*# from anyone. Wichita is a smoking hot altern-rock style babe who teams with the main duo of Columbus and Tallahassee. Little Rock is her gun-toting little sister. Zombieland is fairly scary but it's more thrilling than terrifying. But for the most part, it's a comedy. A wickedly funny, character-driven comedy. The interactions and behaviors of all of the characters are hysterical, and each of them is perfectly cast. Especially Woody Harrelson as Tallahassee. He was absolutely born to play that part. Between this and The Messenger he had an awesome year. He might be the biggest champion of this film. But debut director Ruben Fleischer deserves praise too - his film is fast, lean, stylish and infectious. There's delightful, gory violence and probably the greatest cameo in cinematic history. I wouldn't dare spoil it for you. The videohound reviewer complained about the final act but I thought it was just about the funniest thing I've ever seen. For the last twenty minutes I think there was not a second where I was not laughing. It uses stylish things that I usually loathe - words flashing up on screen, very literal explanations, narration - but for some reason all of it works spectacularly well in this movie. There have been very few movies that have made me so purely happy as Zombieland.

bad sit-com quality

This is the prototypical example of a film's trailer being FAR better than the film itself. In fact, if you've seen the trailer, don't bother watching the movie at all. It deserves no more of a person's time than a cliffs notes, abbreviated recap. The entire running time feels like a failed pilot episode to what would make a bad sit-com. Barely a chuckle in sight, nothing particularly funny or rememberable at all with even Mila Kunis' amazing beauty wasted and held in check. The most unremarkable film of the year that really can't even be labeled as a comedy.
