Ditto KHL

KHL has it right - on two counts. This movie is flat, as was Coppola's vastly overrated "Lost in Translation." Nothing happens in terms of character development, brooding cinematography - achingly predictable in both films - substitutes for either narration or impression. One begins to think that Sophia is, indeed, Marie A. Lost in a world she can't fathom or translate, and doomed to play at being cinematic.

My favorite Coen Bros. Flick

Turturro and Goodman are outstanding in this bizarre, mildy comic and ultimately dark tale about an inspired NY playwright turned Hollywood scriptwriting hack in the late 30s-early 40s. His idealism and ideas are pretty much gone to seed in this dry desert environment, and in his quest to make the ultimate play about 'the working man', he meets Charlie (Goodman), an honest-to-gosh working dude, or is he? Great art deco sets, perfect supporting performances by many (including Judy Davis as the wife of a deranged Fitzgerald-Faulkner type fellow hack and Steve Buscemi as the weird Bellhop 'Call me Chet!') make this film great to watch - not to mention the twists and turns of the story line that will leave you wanting to watch it again.

A Masterpiece

This is Allen's supreme achievement. He has told interviewers he doesn't think he's done anything that ranks "up there" with Bergman - but he's wrong. This is the one "serious" Woody Allen film that works: it has its humorous moments, but it's a brilliant exploration of two marriages, breakups, and all the rest of that territory. All the acting is solid (for the first time, the "Woody Allen" character is not hyper) and the pseudo-docudrama cinematography is riveting. Even the signature Allen "upturn" at the end is done with subtlety and style: the main character has outgrown the "kamikaze woman" syndrome he's suffered from, and he doesn't even realize it. Four bones, kibble, a diamond-studded collar, and two extra walks in the park per day.

Love Sofia Coppola, Hated This Movie

Yes, the costumes look fabulous, the locations are sumptuous, the music is suitable and the acting good, but none of this makes up for the agonizingly slow pace. I wanted to shut it down halfway through. I persisted, but not without wanting to scream in frustration that I wasted over two hours watching this boring epic. I don't know what it was, but I just could not get into it. I don't mind movies with a slow pace (ex. Assassination of Jesse James or anything by Malick, and even Virgin Suicides, Coppola's first flick), but I wouldn't sit through this again if someone paid me.
