Why call this mess Alice in Wonderland when it is, in fact, a sequel?

Colorful Burton Wonderland
Reviewed by criddic2 for Alice in Wonderland at 2010-09-26 04:15:01
Tim Burton always knows how to create colorful, interesting universes to populate his characters, and this is no exception. However, this time he delivers less than a masterpiece. The characters are zany but many without purpose, and the continuation concept is clever but unnecessary. In this case, it may have been preferable for Burton to just re-adapt the book.

Pirates are returning. This great movie lied in the hands of Gore Verbinski and he didn't mess it up. A film full of adventure, treachery, piracy, amazing battles and victory.

This is the film that introduced me to Johnny Depp, for which I am eternally grateful! As a fellow reviewer said, perfect Halloween viewing (though I watched a love scene in the film in class on Valentine's Day; good timing, but the movie's not a full-blown romance)!

A slow gritty look at the life of John Dillinger
Reviewed by Axellion for Public Enemies at 2010-04-01 10:41:29
Public Enemies is a solid, convincing film about the exploits of John Dillinger, and the team of investigators tasked with apprehending the infamous bank robber. Director Michael Mann has crafted a great thick atmosphere around the events of Dillinger?s exploits and his eventual down fall. Johnny Depp starts as Dillinger, a self-stylized robin hood of depression era America, he and his gang roam the country taking banks for everything they have. During his travels, John charms and falls for a beautiful young lady; Evelyn Frechette played by the wonderful Marion Cotillard. They become deeply connected, nearly inseparable. Depp?s performance is understated and lacking any of the wild characteristics that his more popular portrayals are known for. He brings great class and seriousness to the role of Americas most wanted man. Cotillard is equally as thoughtful about her role, playing Dillinger?s great love with grace and poise. Dillinger is chased by the fledgling Federal Bureau of Investigation, and agent Melvin Purvis, Christian Bale, as is true of the most of the films cast; does not over play his character, reframing from screen grabbing performances, opting for a more subdued presence then capable of. The story is slowly paced; perhaps a bit to slow as the mid-section tends to drag a bit. Dillinger finds his list of friends disappearing, organized crime is moving away from simple robbery into the more profitable venues of gambling and kidnapping. The heads of Chicago?s families begin to see Dillinger as a threat to their security, his flamboyant headline grabbing raids bringing unwanted attention to there door steps. I wanted to love this film; its rough take on the story of America?s most famous bank robber was poignant and well told. The gunfights had realism and a lack of explosive style that I appreciated in light of today?s frequent over the top action sequences, Unfortunately I was slightly let down, I did not connect with the characters, Depp and Bale lacked the spark that a great hero villain relationship; never getting to dig into each others nature. It?s a waste to have these two fine actors and never have them explore an antagonistic connection. The entire film has a grounded authentic composition, the action sequences are edited with almost no music, the intense gun fire and low upfront angles give them a gritty more striking tone. Public Enemies is a very well made film, its cinematography and set pieces are beautiful, the characters are grounded in reality, the action is dirty and hard hitting. But I think it may take itself a bit too seriously. Depp doesn?t get to fully develop the persona of Dillinger; his motives are never completely visualized. It is a bit too long and slow in the second act, but does have a great authentic feeling. I enjoyed its details and realistic rendition of fascinating true events, but was not caught by the characters, it failed to grab and excite me.

Just Let the Beauty of It Wash Over You

This is one of Tim Burton's most sumptuous pictures, dripping with atmosphere and superb production design. Depp provides a more humorous take on Ichabod Crane, while maintaining an air of respectability in the character. Ricci is lovely. Stylish and entertaining. Perfect Halloween fare.

Johnny Depp is terrfic, and Martin Landau is brilliant. This is among Tim Burton's best films. But I suggest watching "Plan 9 from Outer Space" before watching this. You'll get a better kick out of the dead-on recreations of scenes in this movie.

DiCaprio is compelling in this movie, but I believe that this is Depps best. He's no Jack Sparrow in this one, just a gentle-spirited brother and son who deeply cares about his family's welfare. I became a fan of Juliette Lewis from her part in this movie. If you like romance, you'll love the connection between these two. Fantastic movie all around!

There is only two reasons to watch this film... 1) if you are so utterly bored, and 2) if you are a fan of Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp. The movie never should of been made. The worst part is the end, it sets itself up so that some moron could very well continue the Pirates saga if they had enough cash to throw around.

If you have never seen the previous Pirates film this movie would seem disjointed at best. Its clearly set up as filler for the 1st and last movies. It is far better than the 3rd movie in the series, however not as good as the first. Main reasons to see the film are if you are like me, a fan of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. They both really carried the film and are imho, the best actors of all 3 films in this trilogy.

Leonardo gets my full respect

It really doesn't matter what Leonardo DiCaprio does after this movie. He will always have my respect as an actor because of his protrayal of the mentally challenged brother in this movie. I saw it when it first came out and before he was a known actor. He is brilliant here. No matter what you think of "Titanic" and his role in it, this movie shows his full potential. The mother is not an actor and is a bit stiff. Johnny Depp plays a compelling but low profile main character. DiCaprio steals the show.

The book was great so the fact that this movie more closely resembles it was a welcome suprise. However, the original movie is an all-time family favorite so this one paled by comparison.

lose the love interest
Reviewed by Kristy for What's Eating Gilbert Grape at 2008-03-12 14:22:59
This would have been such an interesting, lovely little movie about a compellingly idiosyncratic family if only the blah love interest had been trimmed. Juliette Lewis's character is the major sour note in this otherwise quirky little movie. But the interactions of Gilbert with his offbeat family and friends are wonderful.

DiCaprio shined

I would have to agree with the three bone rating for this one. When I first saw this movie I had never heard of DiCaprio and seeing him on the screen it warmed my heart to know they gave a significant roll to a "challenged" actor. Come to find out he is not challenged at all which made it better and worse for me. Good performance on his part but why not give the roll to Corky from "Life Goes On"?
