A slow gritty look at the life of John Dillinger
Reviewed by Axellion for Public Enemies at 2010-04-01 10:41:29
Public Enemies is a solid, convincing film about the exploits of John Dillinger, and the team of investigators tasked with apprehending the infamous bank robber. Director Michael Mann has crafted a great thick atmosphere around the events of Dillinger?s exploits and his eventual down fall. Johnny Depp starts as Dillinger, a self-stylized robin hood of depression era America, he and his gang roam the country taking banks for everything they have. During his travels, John charms and falls for a beautiful young lady; Evelyn Frechette played by the wonderful Marion Cotillard. They become deeply connected, nearly inseparable. Depp?s performance is understated and lacking any of the wild characteristics that his more popular portrayals are known for. He brings great class and seriousness to the role of Americas most wanted man. Cotillard is equally as thoughtful about her role, playing Dillinger?s great love with grace and poise. Dillinger is chased by the fledgling Federal Bureau of Investigation, and agent Melvin Purvis, Christian Bale, as is true of the most of the films cast; does not over play his character, reframing from screen grabbing performances, opting for a more subdued presence then capable of. The story is slowly paced; perhaps a bit to slow as the mid-section tends to drag a bit. Dillinger finds his list of friends disappearing, organized crime is moving away from simple robbery into the more profitable venues of gambling and kidnapping. The heads of Chicago?s families begin to see Dillinger as a threat to their security, his flamboyant headline grabbing raids bringing unwanted attention to there door steps. I wanted to love this film; its rough take on the story of America?s most famous bank robber was poignant and well told. The gunfights had realism and a lack of explosive style that I appreciated in light of today?s frequent over the top action sequences, Unfortunately I was slightly let down, I did not connect with the characters, Depp and Bale lacked the spark that a great hero villain relationship; never getting to dig into each others nature. It?s a waste to have these two fine actors and never have them explore an antagonistic connection. The entire film has a grounded authentic composition, the action sequences are edited with almost no music, the intense gun fire and low upfront angles give them a gritty more striking tone. Public Enemies is a very well made film, its cinematography and set pieces are beautiful, the characters are grounded in reality, the action is dirty and hard hitting. But I think it may take itself a bit too seriously. Depp doesn?t get to fully develop the persona of Dillinger; his motives are never completely visualized. It is a bit too long and slow in the second act, but does have a great authentic feeling. I enjoyed its details and realistic rendition of fascinating true events, but was not caught by the characters, it failed to grab and excite me.

Idiotic, but fun.

The film has extraordinary visuals, but it's still a mindless (albeit entertaining) popcorn flick. Nothing more, nothing less.

300 Stars for 300
Reviewed by CaptMarc for 300 at 2009-11-21 10:49:18
The movie 300 is all about a few men (300) facing thousands (the enemy) against overwhelming odds. Courage, duty, honor, and loyalty to the nth degree mixed with some great special effects, good screen play, and a plot based on history equals a movie to own. I liked the sepia/color artistic flair that the movie was filmed in too. There's an ogre battle scene that will chill you to the bone. It will have you returning to your scene selection screen time and time again.

I really liked the movie

The acting was very good by everyone in the top roles. The violence in the movie isn't sickening, although there is a lot of shooting (I expected). It isn't the best movie ever, but worth seeing.

An old fashioned epic

I have read mixed reviews on Australia. I saw it as an old fashioned epic. The kind you rarely see made today. Kidman and Jackman are wonderful. Although the scenery and special effects steal the show.

I saw this with two men - we all hated it. Not even Kate Beckinsdale in black leather kept them entertained. I have never ever been so bored at a supposed action movie.

Outstanding Production
Reviewed by rqauma for Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at 2008-06-05 06:40:25
Thousands of comments have been made on this outstanding production and there is little left to write that has not already been written or said. Again, not surprisingly at last night's 'Oscars', the third film in the trilogy took most of the awards. Like others I could give glowing comments about content, acting, production, direction, visual effects etc. but will instead, convey what I consider to be equally important; that is the realistic and accurate portrayal of a classic masterpiece of literature from one of the world's most imaginative authors.

Manic Musical Eye Candy
Reviewed by KHL for Moulin Rouge at 2008-03-24 17:20:18
Seeing this in the theater when it was released, there was a palpable air of 'what the...?'. A raucous, raunchy musical romp through the last year of the century in Paris. If you can get beyond the fact that you'll hear everything from Nirvana to Elton John to Air Supply (gasp!), to Wings in the cleverly constructed soundtrack, then you're fine! The more I've viewed it since that first showing, the more I enjoy it. There's so much kinetic imagery that it's hard to take it all in in one sitting. McGregor and Kidman are great (and sound pretty good too) as doomed lovers, but Broadbent and Roxburgh, as the 'ringleader' of the Moulin Rouge and the 'evil Duke' are hysterical and nearly steal the show (the best number has to be their strange and comedically menacing cover of 'Like a Virgin' by Madonna). Costumes are fantastic and while about 20 minutes could probably have been cut, it still makes for an entertaining time.

Best of the trilogy
Reviewed by molly for Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at 2008-03-20 12:37:11
A difficult call, but I found this the best of the three. If you are a fan and can ever find an entire day -- watch all three, extended versions. And, though others sometimes think the following advice I've given is just plain weird, I have advised friends and relatives going through a bad patch and needing a little escape to watch the trilogy. Lets you escape for the day and put your troubles into perspective -- after all, nothing can be as bad as being hunted by orcs.
