The American dream in "Rebel..." and in real life today, is unfettered acquisition of objects and money, with no soul or character. That's what the kids are rebelling against. I wish more kids today would rebel against soulless America with its greed and avarice.

James Dean...the son of Mr. Howell?? No wonder the boy had trouble respecting dear-old-dad. This movie broke down obstacles of teen life and laid them to waste. Natalie Wood, Dean and Sal Mineo....all tragically lost to us. A great part by future star, Dennis Hopper. This movie should not be missed...teen angst at it's best.
Bette steals the show as the willful heroine. When she pushes too far and is turned on by her social class, her fiance, Henry Fonda, breaks the engagement and goes to work in the North. Torn by regret Bette languishes on the family plantation until disease requires her to open her home to the very people who deserted her earlier. Among them is the ex-fiance and his northern wife. More conflict ensues and Bette becomes more and more distraught. How will she regain her dignity?? I really love this movie. I think Bette won an oscar for her performance, I know she was nominated.
