A very German tale of "Don't talk to strangers"
Reviewed by Juliska for The Reader at 2011-06-03 14:59:59
One reviewer criticized this film for being "too intellectual" and "too cold" when it needs to be the opposite. What that reviewer overlooks (or is naive about) is that this story is set among *Germans* in German culture. It was originally a novel written in German by a German. Unlike American culture, German culture *is* more intellectual, detached and unemotional...at least on the surface. This film captures that culture magnificently, esp. in casting then-unknown David Kross, a German, as the film's teenaged protagonist. He has more lines in the film than Fiennes & Winslet, but he's a newbie still paying his dues, so he got little credit for his wonderful portrayal of a sensitive young man who falls in love with someone whom he too late discovers is an emotional and moral neanderthal who cannot love him. She repeatedly breaks his heart, and he suffers a lifetime of pain because of it. She simply uses him for her own purposes, providing only sex in return. Today that's rightly called psychological, emotional and sexual abuse of a minor. The same previous reviewer writes: ?Oddly, issues of age rarely come into the story, where I feel like if the genders were reversed and a 15-year-old girl developed a sexual relationship with a man twice her age, audiences would talk about nothing else. Discuss the gender discrepancy amongst yourselves.? This film accurately shows the long-term damage and ambivalent and conflicted feelings of a teenager whom an adult has abused. A large part of what?s so difficult for a sexual abuse victim to recover from is that they often feel both tenderness and anger, love and hatred toward the abuser. And showing how such abuse can be just as damaging to a boy as a girl makes this film iconoclastic.

Like "Apollo 13" you know how the story ends, but you are held spellbound as the events unfold regardless. Captivating performances from a superb cast, exciting visual effects, majestic art design and costumes, a sweeping music score and undying love. It's got it all!

Appalling
Reviewed by tmeyer for The Holiday at 2010-08-11 08:43:43
Even by stupid romantic comedy standards, The Holiday is unfathomably bad. There are two parallel stories, which is two stories too many. The first, and marginally better, involves Jude Law and Cameron Diaz. Jude Law is ok - Diaz is awful. She is a charmless, superficial woman and why Jude Law could fall for her is unimaginable. With that story the film attempts to inject some overblown emotion at the last minute and tries to pretend like the audience cared about these characters. We didn't. The second one has Kate Winslet, a very boring subplot with an aging screenwriter, and one of the worst performances of all time by a horrifically miscast Jack Black. The Holiday is boring, it's annoying, it's interminable, and from beginning to end it's absolutely insufferable. Avoid like the plague at all costs.

Overrated

This is a good film, but the romance is so sacchrine Hollywood. Plus, although I liked the historical aspects, I felt like people I talked to who said "The boat sank. Get used to it." Still, essential teen viewing, 'specially for those exposed only to "Twilight."

Exciting, Alive and Vibrant
Reviewed by criddic2 for Hamlet at 2009-08-24 03:43:17
This is the only uncut version of Shakespeare's play committed to film. As such, it is a relief to find it done so well. While not all of the star-studded cast fit too easily (Jack Lemmon is a bit ill-at-ease in a brief bit), but others fare quite well (Heston, Crystal). Excellent production design, and great performances from Branagh, Winslet, Jacobi and Christie. If you fear the 4 hour running time, the Gibson version is fine. But if you want great cinema, this is the best version.

Something's Rotten

FOUR BONES? Have you been at the dognip? This thing is ghastly! Hamlet swinging on a chandelier across the room in the final scene? Give me a break - or a poison-tipped sword. This is like a Corman send-up of Shakespeare, without any of the humor. See Mel Gibson do his wired Prince, Nicol Williamson do his haunted Prince. (Skip Olivier's self-aggrandizing Prince-as-Young-Werther.) But stay away from this bizarrely inadvertent parody: Prince-as-Doug-Fairbanks.

Gondry has a reputation as a gimmicky filmmaker - if you saw the half-baked Be Kind Rewind, you'd probably agree with that sentiment - but Eternal Sunshine is one of the most emotionally honest films I've ever seen. So freakin' good.
