Crime doesn't pay...unless you Cagney
Reviewed by ReelVideoMan for Angels with Dirty Faces at 2009-07-31 16:48:43
Classic tale of two friends who?s destines drastically diverged only to climactically reunite. Cagney lives a life of crime while his friend O?Brien talks to the Catholic priesthood. Out from a stint in the pen Cagney comes back to his own stomping grounds to collect on some money his crooked lawyer, none other than Humphrey Bogart, saved for him in the clink. Boggie isn?t going to let go of the money that easily, but one thing leads to another and Cagney is back at his ol? game. It isn?t long before he takes a few young teens in a small time gang under his crooked wings. The only problem is that these same kids are part Father O?Brien?s youth program. Does crime or faith win out? Does Cagney change his wicked ways or go down guns blazing? Well my friends that is for you to find out and it?s a trip worth taking!

strange but fun

In this movie Bacall's character befriends Bogart who has escaped from jail. In classic film noir manner, she believes his stories without question. Bogart wants to solve the crime so he can be set free. The strange part is that we don't see Bogart in the first part of the movie but only hear his voice, because one of the things he does is have plastic surgery so he will not be recognized. Not my favorite B&B movie, but still lots of fun.

Bogart and Bacall Sizzle

This classic is one of my favorites. If you buy the DVD you will get the original version which is very different from the final release. The final cut is much better but the first version explains a lot of stuff that is left in HUH??? mode in the release version. The movie has everything, the rich socialites, the sordid affairs, the sultry dames and Bogart as the cynical but honorable detective. You must see this.

one of bogarts best

I feel this is one of bogarts finest performances. He plays a demented and evil character but he plays it in a very natural way and doesn't overdo it. The movie also has walter huston also playing a great part of a prospector which he won an oscar and deservedly so.. If you love bogart you will love this movie it is great!

Excellent Change of Pace for Bogart

Bogart steps out of his usual role of the tough guy in this interesting and well-done noir. Bogart's portrayal of a bitter Hollywood writer trying to keep in work is terrific, low-key yet surging with emotion. In real life, it's been said that Bogart wished he had the talent for writing, as he respected the writers in Hollywood more than anyone else, so this may have been his homage to them. Excellent suspense, great plot and good acting all around make this a movie that can be viewed many times and still emjoyed.

I agree with Mr. Bogart "It's the stuff dreams are made of".
