Bad Rap

Sometimes the Retriever and I see eye to eye, but . . . The conventional wisdom on this film is wrong. It has its moments, is occasionally hilarious, and almost always enjoyable. It is not Shampoo or Heaven Can Wait, but it is head and shoulders above many films people rave about. (And the Heston Seldes performances are mawkish and out of place.) There is much that could have been done to improve this film, but it probably got panned because people like to hate Warren Beatty when he gives them the slimmest opportunity to do so.

Just fun

Totally agree with Turk182. I watch this every time I see it on cable. But it's better than two lame bones. It's no cinematic work of art, but it's lovable.

A Crown Jewel

The Hound is too unkind - way too unkind. This, along with Being There, is Hal Ashby's crowning achievement. A poignant blend of comedy and tragedy, it wraps itself around the Sixties and says everything there is to say about the Sexual Revolution, Beverly Hills, and the fate of those who let themselves get caught up in "the scene". The music is right on, the acting superb, and the pacing perfect. Even an accidental bottle that comes rolling, unscripted, out of a garbage can thrown by an angry Warren Beatty adds another gem to the many clusters that make up this movie. Four bones, a kibble treat and a diamond-studded collar.

A Charming Movie

This is one of those movies that I'm going to watch every time I find it on cable. Hawn and Russell are excellent together and Garry Marshall even manages to overcome his own shortcomings to deliver a charming love story that everyone can enjoy.
