Like "Apollo 13" you know how the story ends, but you are held spellbound as the events unfold regardless. Captivating performances from a superb cast, exciting visual effects, majestic art design and costumes, a sweeping music score and undying love. It's got it all!

This is a good film, but the romance is so sacchrine Hollywood. Plus, although I liked the historical aspects, I felt like people I talked to who said "The boat sank. Get used to it." Still, essential teen viewing, 'specially for those exposed only to "Twilight."

A Masterpiece of Suspenseful film making
Reviewed by Axellion for Shutter Island at 2010-02-28 10:18:08
Some movies beg for repeat viewings, Shutter Island practically demands it. That is not to say it was hard to follow or the plot baffling in some way. There is so much more than meets the eye here, this is no simply detective story, so many small details and touches that a return viewing would bring already deep characters and scenes into an entirely different light. So profound is the mystery of Shutter Island that a second viewing many be as if watching a new film. Leonardo DiCaprio once again teams with Martin Scorsese, playing U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels. Sent to the fog shrouded tilter island to investigate a disappearance and the local insane asylum. Scorsese once again propels his actors to great heights. DiCaprio?s Marshal Daniels is a severely troubled man, the denizens of the asylum only serving to reminding him of his own labored mind, his past coming back to haunt him. An extraordinarily tight thriller, from the very first frame, as a boat emerges from the fog, Shutter Island is a masterwork of suspense, the plot thickens and the disappearance fades away to the greater mystery of the asylum, truly genuinely creepy. Scorsese has another masterpiece on his hands; the deeper picture slowly builds, each sliver forming a remarkable tense downright eerie account. Music was of particular note, a very quiet film at times, with a sudden, perhaps scary and startling, score. Not from jump scares but slow haunting images, the island itself comes alive, sinking its fangs into the viewer, entangling. Stunning visual and very well acted across the board. Scorsese continues to prove the he is in fact the greatest living director. I genuinely had absolutely no idea how the film would end, I could not imagine a way in which it could wrap up this enigmatic plot. Yet somehow it comes together, an ending so shocking and utterly spine-chilling, it changes this entire pervious events. I must see it again; I need to watch it with new eyes, watching for the small clues, seeing the minute word and actions, hinting at deeper events. A meticulously crafted film, the fog dissolves, reveling something remarkably heart wrenching.

The movie had so much potential...
Reviewed by NWRdr4 for Gangs of New York at 2010-01-03 00:52:02
... and yet, all of its merits are shadowed by its uneven pacing and seemingly-sloppy editing. That being said, Scorsese knows how to tell a good story, and Daniel Day-Lewis proves (once again) to be an amazing actor.

Hard to believe this film did not win any of its 10 Academy Award Nominations. Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio deliver with outstanding performances. Great acting from supporting cast as well. Slow at times and a bit long, but great movie overall.

Terrific
Reviewed by daswitzer for What's Eating Gilbert Grape at 2008-08-03 18:34:03
DiCaprio is compelling in this movie, but I believe that this is Depps best. He's no Jack Sparrow in this one, just a gentle-spirited brother and son who deeply cares about his family's welfare. I became a fan of Juliette Lewis from her part in this movie. If you like romance, you'll love the connection between these two. Fantastic movie all around!

Leonardo gets my full respect
Reviewed by dj101092 for What's Eating Gilbert Grape at 2008-04-04 20:33:18
It really doesn't matter what Leonardo DiCaprio does after this movie. He will always have my respect as an actor because of his protrayal of the mentally challenged brother in this movie. I saw it when it first came out and before he was a known actor. He is brilliant here. No matter what you think of "Titanic" and his role in it, this movie shows his full potential. The mother is not an actor and is a bit stiff. Johnny Depp plays a compelling but low profile main character. DiCaprio steals the show.

lose the love interest
Reviewed by Kristy for What's Eating Gilbert Grape at 2008-03-12 14:22:59
This would have been such an interesting, lovely little movie about a compellingly idiosyncratic family if only the blah love interest had been trimmed. Juliette Lewis's character is the major sour note in this otherwise quirky little movie. But the interactions of Gilbert with his offbeat family and friends are wonderful.

What a waste of time this film was. Not only is the topic boring but the plot/acting/filming/scenes/girl at the concession stands were also painful to endure. It was the film equivelent of a prostate exam without the polite banter.

DiCaprio shined

I would have to agree with the three bone rating for this one. When I first saw this movie I had never heard of DiCaprio and seeing him on the screen it warmed my heart to know they gave a significant roll to a "challenged" actor. Come to find out he is not challenged at all which made it better and worse for me. Good performance on his part but why not give the roll to Corky from "Life Goes On"?
