Living in Las Vegas I find it a stretch that it works. But it is still one of my favorite movies.

Fluffy but lots of fun,
Reviewed by Alan-Gekko for Ocean's Eleven at 2011-07-11 22:41:10
A rarity--a remake that's better than the original. 11 men led by Danny Ocean (George Clooney) prepare to rob a vault linked to 3 casinos in Las Vegas. His partners in crime include Brad Pitt, Carl Reiner, Elliot Gould, Casey Affleck, Matt Damon and Scott Caan. Also, the casinos are owned by Tery Benedict (Andy Garcia) who is romancing Ocean's ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts). Fun, engrossing, moves smoothly, the entire cast plays it cool and easy and Steven Soderbergh directs it with flair and intelligence. Yes, it's light; yes, it's a trifle but it's so FUN!

Fine Acting, Standard History Lesson
Reviewed by criddic2 for Invictus at 2011-03-07 19:38:06
Clint Eastwood is a great director, and "Invictus" doesn't hurt that record. It just isn't a masterpiece like "Unforgiven," "a Perfect World" or "Million Dollar Baby." It's a solid effort about an interesting event in history. Morgan Freeman is ideal casting as Nelson Mandela, and Matt Damon turns in a convincing performance as the captain of the rugby team Mandela uses as a way to unite South Africa. Worthwhile, but not great.

Matt Damon gives an eerily effective performance as a man who uses other people's identities as his own in this chilling psychological thriller by the late Anthony Minghella.

A Little Tale of Respect
Reviewed by Raspberry for Ponyo at 2009-08-17 20:07:36
Ponyo, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, is a little tale that speaks of respect for the ocean, respect for humans young and old, and respect for cultural differences. It is a new tale of a little goldfish wishing to be a girl, rather than a retelling of Disney?s Little Mermaid. Miyazaki has animated by hand, a whimsical, magical film for the young and the young-at-heart. The film begins with a slow undulating blue-green palette of sea anemones, jellyfish, and scores of little fanciful goldfish with childlike faces. There isn?t any need for narrative, the motion of the creatures and the music of Jo Hisaiahi tell the beginning. The fanciful little goldfish, Brunhild, leaves her ocean home on a jellyfish. Upon reaching the surface she is caught up in a fishing net full of other fish, garbage, and sludge. She is propelled into a jar, which is rolled to shore where five-year-old Sosuke (voice by Frankie Jonas) retrieves it. He cuts his hand when breaking the jar open to free the little goldfish. Brunhild tastes his blood, which heals Sosuke?s cut, and puts in motion her transformation to a human, at the same time throwing nature out of balance. Sosuke puts the little goldfish in a green pail and names her Ponyo (Noah Cyrus). Sosuke?s mother, Lisa (Tina Fey), lets him take Ponyo to school, which is right next door to the nursing home where she works. Lisa?s crazy driving down the picturesque winding road, past a dry dock, through the bustling fishing town, and up a tree-lined road to the nursing home is representative of Miyazaki?s wonderful sequence of action, and illustrates perfectly a parent?s hectic morning. Miyazaki has created another strong, independent, female character in Lisa. Making her a loving, sensible, modern mother both to Sosuke and Ponyo. Lisa?s telephone conversation with the not-coming-home-again husband, Kiochi (Matt Damon) because the ship he captains must make another run, is a typical wife?s reaction. Ponyo?s wizard father, Fujimoto (Liam Neeson) reminiscent of Howl?s Moving Castle, arrives to take Ponyo back to her ocean home. Fujimoto uses one of his elixirs to try and put nature back in balance, but magical little Ponyo escapes again upsetting more elixir in the process, and causing a tsunami. Running on the backs of giant dolphins to get to Sosuke, this redheaded, little girl reminds the audience of the stubborn, adventurous little Mei in My Neighbor Totoro. Ponyo is just as adventurous and curious as Mei. When Fujimoto realizes what Ponyo has done he calls for Gran Mamare (Kate Blanchett), the Goddess of the ocean, to help with the situation. This wise, calming Goddess arrives in a blue flowing garment that never ends. She has a private talk with Lisa discussing the future of the young children, which helps the audience understand Sosuke and Ponyo?s relationship is not that of lovers, but of brother and sister. The life-goes-on quiet simple ending is typical of Miyazaki films leaving the audience full of hope.

Bourne Again

http://braidedthreads.blogspot.com/2008/09/bourne-again.html ... This film promises to reaveal much of what has been hidden through the series--enough to satisfy us, and bring some things full circle. It reemphasizes some of Bourne's culpability in the ruthless person he became, and gives him the chance, if not to redeem himself, at least to be able to grow into someone different. He shows considerable restrain in this movie, as if to hold back the machinery of Bourne-the-killer, who is able to act violently without regret or remorse. He is both capable of violence, and capable of choice, and it is fascinating to watch the intersection of these dual impulses.

The Sheepish Shepherd
Reviewed by www.BraidedThreads.blogspot.com for The Good Shepherd at 2008-10-09 11:54:27
http://braidedthreads.blogspot.com/2008/10/sheepish-shepherd.html It struck me how little the main character (played by Matt Damon) actually does in this movie. He never makes any active choices - when he is directing things for the CIA, he announces, and others carry out his decisions. He is pretty blank as a character. He does make a couple of choices with regard to his son, though. But he also doesn't choose to deter his son beyond his vague suggestions about life in the CIA. Most other decisions are made for him and he follows orders when he is not giving orders. He does make the choice to turn around in the hallway and go back to the Skull and Bones innitiation. He chooses that life. He does what is expected of him. He has sex when he is dragged into it, he gets married when the girl getspregnant, he goes overseas when asked.

Very Good Movie

It's been over a year since first seeing Saving Private Ryan -- it's a worthy effort by Speilberg--his best since Shindler's List by far. You've probably heard about the amount of violence, blood, and gore and that's all true--it's got the Viet Nam movie style violence (and then some) but it's not gratuitous. Were it sanitized like early WWII movies, modern audiences probably wouldn't take it as seriously.

I know a lot of people like him...
Reviewed by Tom for Ocean's Eleven at 2008-03-12 13:57:38
But I'm sorry, George Clooney is nowhere near being Frank Sinatra. It just doesn't work. The original Ocean's 11 is an amazing timepiece showing the coolest guys and gals in the 60s universe horsing around, partying, and in general having fun making jokes together. This, by comparison, is more like the major studios having fun thinking people wouldn't know that this movie had already been done, and done better, with bigger stars, better scenery (mainly due to the spectacle of the Vegas of the 60s, before Disney moved in) and better all-around performances. Plus, of course, songs by Rat-Pack members.

This is the best representation yet of the horrors witnessed by the kids sent to Europe to fight in the war. I found myself breathless at times. While their are references to factual events scattered throughout the movie, the fact that it is ultimately a work of fiction bothered me initially. Regardless, the battles portrayed in the film could have been ANY battle fought in the hedgerows and villages of Normandy during the summer of 1944. Can't wait to see

How is this for an ultimatum.. give me my money back or else!! Unfortunately I am not sure who to hold accountable for this mess. I can't blame Damon he is like the obidient dog that sits under the table waiting for scraps. I can't blame Julie Stiles for toally being mis-cast (note to Julie, stick to bad dance movies from not on). Guess I have to blame myself for seeing this. Guess I owe myself some money.

Three bones for this regurgitated plot that brings absolutely nothing new to the crime genre. Hmmm it's not comedy, it's not drama, it's not action, but it has a lot of pretty hollywood A-listers in it. This must be gold!! (assuming gold is the nuggets I pull from my nose I would agree).
