Nothing more than a typical western that clumsily tries to be more.

I'm not sure I understand the hype for this film. A complex character study? No way. The main flaw: John Wayne's racist, obsessed character, Ethan, is (at one point in the film) ready to shoot his niece for becoming "a buck" (think Dances with Wolves). Yet, near the end of the movie, as he's chasing her down, he suddenly decides to save her, and carry her off into the sunset. This is not characterization--it's a cop-out, the writer's way of saying "I'm too lazy to do anything else, so I'll throw this at the audience." It's frustrating as hell, considering the many great moments the movie had. The scene should've been fleshed-out, so that we can see some epiphany that Ethan comes to. Anyway, if you wanna see a good John Wayne western there's plenty other better ones you can watch.

Easily the greatest movie ever made.

Gone with the Wind has everything going for it, and nothing against it; it's simply perfect in every way. The illustrious story, which some have described as "overlong," can be more appropriately called "epic." The lead characters do not just give great performances--they create living, breathing characters. The brilliant usage of the film's admirably daring color-scheme perfectly compliments the mastery behind the camera; every shot is beautiful in its own right. And to top it all off, the movie's large-scale plot is never muddled--even in its most chaotic moments, the distinguished characterization and extensive set-pieces are strong enough to regroup the loose ends and effectively pull the film back together--that is, until the next splendid plot twist.

Crime doesn't pay...unless you Cagney
Reviewed by ReelVideoMan for Angels with Dirty Faces at 2009-07-31 16:48:43
Classic tale of two friends who?s destines drastically diverged only to climactically reunite. Cagney lives a life of crime while his friend O?Brien talks to the Catholic priesthood. Out from a stint in the pen Cagney comes back to his own stomping grounds to collect on some money his crooked lawyer, none other than Humphrey Bogart, saved for him in the clink. Boggie isn?t going to let go of the money that easily, but one thing leads to another and Cagney is back at his ol? game. It isn?t long before he takes a few young teens in a small time gang under his crooked wings. The only problem is that these same kids are part Father O?Brien?s youth program. Does crime or faith win out? Does Cagney change his wicked ways or go down guns blazing? Well my friends that is for you to find out and it?s a trip worth taking!

Old South

Bette steals the show as the willful heroine. When she pushes too far and is turned on by her social class, her fiance, Henry Fonda, breaks the engagement and goes to work in the North. Torn by regret Bette languishes on the family plantation until disease requires her to open her home to the very people who deserted her earlier. Among them is the ex-fiance and his northern wife. More conflict ensues and Bette becomes more and more distraught. How will she regain her dignity?? I really love this movie. I think Bette won an oscar for her performance, I know she was nominated.

Bogart and Bacall Sizzle
Reviewed by libraryhag for The Big Sleep at 2009-07-29 16:35:12
This classic is one of my favorites. If you buy the DVD you will get the original version which is very different from the final release. The final cut is much better but the first version explains a lot of stuff that is left in HUH??? mode in the release version. The movie has everything, the rich socialites, the sordid affairs, the sultry dames and Bogart as the cynical but honorable detective. You must see this.

one of bogarts best
Reviewed by spartacus for Treasure of the Sierra Madre at 2008-11-02 18:57:41
I feel this is one of bogarts finest performances. He plays a demented and evil character but he plays it in a very natural way and doesn't overdo it. The movie also has walter huston also playing a great part of a prospector which he won an oscar and deservedly so.. If you love bogart you will love this movie it is great!
