Did the female chimp have a "thing" for marky Mark? Gross!!! And how the hell did paul Giamatti's ape character know what asprin was? God, this was a bad movie!!!
Tim Burton always knows how to create colorful, interesting universes to populate his characters, and this is no exception. However, this time he delivers less than a masterpiece. The characters are zany but many without purpose, and the continuation concept is clever but unnecessary. In this case, it may have been preferable for Burton to just re-adapt the book.
This is the film that introduced me to Johnny Depp, for which I am eternally grateful! As a fellow reviewer said, perfect Halloween viewing (though I watched a love scene in the film in class on Valentine's Day; good timing, but the movie's not a full-blown romance)!

This is one of Tim Burton's most sumptuous pictures, dripping with atmosphere and superb production design. Depp provides a more humorous take on Ichabod Crane, while maintaining an air of respectability in the character. Ricci is lovely. Stylish and entertaining. Perfect Halloween fare.

Johnny Depp is terrfic, and Martin Landau is brilliant. This is among Tim Burton's best films. But I suggest watching "Plan 9 from Outer Space" before watching this. You'll get a better kick out of the dead-on recreations of scenes in this movie.
The book was great so the fact that this movie more closely resembles it was a welcome suprise. However, the original movie is an all-time family favorite so this one paled by comparison.
