Cage demonstrates his versatility

Nicholas Cage in laid back slightly aging Hippy mode is well cast in this whimsically amusing film. The hordes of children called Arizona after their father's furniture business provide ample opportunity for mayhem and confusion! Well worth getting hold of this wacky movie if you have the chance.

Could have been a good plot...

Like most movies now a days, the premise was there, but the movie just fell flat. The ending had nothing to do with the overall plot. My choices in movies are now questioned by my household because of movies like this.

Best film I've seen at the theaters in a while
Reviewed by UncleKitty for Kick-Ass at 2010-04-16 00:53:32
Generally I hate going to see films in theaters due to the cost of the tickets and munchies. Rarely do I feel I've seen a film in theaters once that didn't make me feel like I'd been ripped off, and rarely have I ever seen a film there twice. This is a film I'd go to see again. If you're a fan of comic book or superhero films, or just plain old violent action movies you should in theory love this. Be aware this isn't the typical example of either of those genres. It's rated R for a reason: Hit Girl. An 11 year old killing machine who fights while we listen to Joan Jett in the background. She steals every scene, and for good reason. She's the most over the top character in the film (possibly the most over the top I've seen in some time). Rarely have I heard an audience cheer for someone killing bad guys the way I did for her. I think the guy next to me said he was in love, much like one of the films characters did after watching her kneecap, throat slit, and headshot her way through a pack of bad guys. She is awesome incarnate. There are a few flaws (which admittedly may be intentional given that this is a satirical parody) that prevent me from giving this a 4.0, but they are inconsequential. I?m rating this on whether or not I think you?ll feel robbed if you see it in a theater. And no. I do not believe you will. Comic fans should pay special attention to Nicholas Cage?s brutally satirical parody of Adam West as Batman. It?s his best role in years. Well maybe. His movies have kind of sucked lately so I stopped watching them, but this is the early Nick Cage I liked in films. So it?s the best role I?ve seen him play in years. One of the great conceits of Batman (and other human level comic vigilantes) is that they let opponents live. This film tears that apart showing that basically you can?t afford to do that because in real life the first time you lost a fight you?d be dead or crippled. It?s called Kick #!@%*# because that?s what happens to the main character. A lot. A turning point in the film comes when he meets Hit Girl and Big Daddy (nothing Freudian there?) and realizes he?s in way over his head and has little more to offer the world than good intentions. I do hope the planned sequel materializes.

Meh.

The action scenes are great (not surprising, since the movie's directed by John Woo); they're the highlight of the movie. The writing and acting, on the other hand, are a different story. The script has good intentions, but ultimately fails due to characterization cliches, poor dialogue, and wanna-be sentimentality. Nicholas Cage acts in his typical, apathetic fashion (a zombie-esque scowl upon his face, peppered with the occasional slurred line) for most of the movie; the rest of the performers don't fare much better.

WTF

I love watching movies of all types and consider myself to be open minded when reviewing films but in this case I can only say that this movie was an absolute piece of crap. I feel like I raped my brain by sitting through 90 minutes of some of the worst acting I have ever seen. The only redeeming part of this movie was the special effects and the ending.

Running with Matchsticks
Reviewed by www.BraidedThreads.blogspot.com for Matchstick Men at 2008-10-09 12:05:22
http://braidedthreads.blogspot.com/2008/09/running-with-matchsticks.html ...By the end of Matchstick Men, the filmmakers seem to feel guilty for asking us to sympathize with someone who steals for a living so they try to overcompensate by bringing Cage through an emotional, psychological, and professional meat grinder. A twist ending makes the film you just watched seem like a more fascinating one than it did while you were actually watching it. That "aha!" ending almost seems borrowed from another movie: one with enough mystery and suspense to prepare you for such a satisfying revelation. If only the the filmmakers had been able to transfer some of the tension and confusion of Cage's character to the viewer so that we could have a few more question marks to carry through the film until we reach the answers in the end. As it is, we get answers for questions we didn't know we were supposed to be asking.

I found this a good action/adventure movie to watch with younger children who are not quite ready for Indiana Jones. Also sparked interest in national monuments as exciting and not just for school.

Edge of seat con game

I had to watch this film a few times before I loved it. Cage is brilliant portraying a mentally ill genius con artist. I thoroughly enjoyed his character from the 1st minute. I saw the movie in the theatre and thought, ugh. But once I bought it on DVD I began to like the movie more. The movie is slow at the beginning but it picks up enough and when the twist ending hits you, you're left wondering what the heck just happened.
