One of Julia Roberts',newer,better movies!

This is one of Julia Roberts' newer, better movies. It's not like her earlier movies in the late 80s and early 90s which were mostly spin-offs of 1940s romance thrillers.

Tom Hanks drags this one out.

If I have to hear Tom Hanks trying to figure out where he is ever again, I will never watch another one of his films. I must be missing something but this movie goes nowhere.

A good mystery movie
Reviewed by The_MOW for Angels & Demons at 2011-05-18 16:23:36
"Robert Langdon" (Tom Hanks) is back, and he has only a few hours to solve a mystery to save thousands of Catholic faithful, and top candidates for role of pope, before an incident which will kill them all as they await the annoucement of who the new leader of the church will be. Now, "Langdon", along with a woman who helped create antimatter in a lab, must figure out the clues and save the faithful of the world's largest church. Let me say first that this is much better than the original movie, which I barely remember seeing. You really don't need to read the novel that the movie is based upon to enjoy it. There are some really good performances in this film, especially from Hanks, who proved himself as a solid leading man many times. Here, he really shines as a leading man. There is some serious problems with character development with supporting characters, especially "Dr. Vittoria Vetra" (Ayelet Zurer), whose antimatter is being used as a weapon, and "Camerlengo Patrick McKenna" (Ewan McGregor), who turns an interesting plot twist that I never expected at the end, but isn't seen as much as I would like. Another problem with this movie is that it is obvious that they opted for green screen for many scenes depicting Roman Catholic churches within Rome's city limits (the church refused to allow the movie to be filmed at the locations since the church declared the book offesive to the church). A barely trained eye (which I have since I learned TV production back in high school) could see the actors were in front of a green screen. These effects will become noticeable to the untrained eye as the film ages, and special effects advance. One thing this movie does pretty well is that it gives very little time for the audience to breathe between action and plot advancing scenes. You get excited as "Langdon" and "Vetra" get closer to the murderer(s) as they discover new clues. Despite not being able to shoot on location, and the threat of a strike at the time, Ron Howard did a great job in the director's chair as usual. He was able to use interesting camera angles to help tell the story nicely. I can't really say I noticed the soundtrack of the movie, since I barely pay attention to instrumentals since that's not my style I listen to. I do notice that it helped the scenes, and in this movie it did. If you see this on any of the movie channels like HBO, or on Netflix, check this one out.

Better than I expected.

All false truths and historical inaccuracies aside, The DaVinci Code is a well-made and fast-paced thriller that will certainly be remembered (if not only for the controversy it caused). Concerning the controversial nature of the plot, I think it's important to keep in mind what Roger Ebert said: "Yes, the plot is absurd, but then most movie plots are absurd. That's what we pay to see." If you take it as pure entertainment, the film is an enjoyable and exciting (not to mention arguably classic) adventure.

My Favorite Darabont Film

Powerful and incredibly well acted, this is one movie that, in my opinion, actually improved on the book. (I saw the movie first.) Incredibly faithful, it made only a couple of minor detours, but they were detours that made the story better. Some might complain about the length, but it never bothers me, as this movie is just too dang brilliant.

The astronauts' bravery, their wives' fear and the calm panic engulfing mission control - it's all brilliantly shown on screen.

Very Good Movie
Reviewed by rqauma for Saving Private Ryan at 2008-06-05 06:42:26
It's been over a year since first seeing Saving Private Ryan -- it's a worthy effort by Speilberg--his best since Shindler's List by far. You've probably heard about the amount of violence, blood, and gore and that's all true--it's got the Viet Nam movie style violence (and then some) but it's not gratuitous. Were it sanitized like early WWII movies, modern audiences probably wouldn't take it as seriously.

Running
Reviewed by molly for Forrest Gump at 2008-03-26 09:01:22
Not a typical review here, but rather a comment about the running theme in the movie. This actually helped inspire me to begin running. The apparent freedom Gump achieved from his running was the most effective part of this theme. Kind of like the "runner's high," which really does exist. And if you like shrimp, pick up the Forest Gump Cookbook -- try the shrimp cake recipe.

Neat movie about a real band. It was good enough that I actually enjoyed the title song every time they played it. This sure isn't a one-hit wonder!

Essential viewing for American citizens

This is the best representation yet of the horrors witnessed by the kids sent to Europe to fight in the war. I found myself breathless at times. While their are references to factual events scattered throughout the movie, the fact that it is ultimately a work of fiction bothered me initially. Regardless, the battles portrayed in the film could have been ANY battle fought in the hedgerows and villages of Normandy during the summer of 1944. Can't wait to see

Amazing series

HBO and Tom Hanks make a great team with this series, just a superb telling of the ins-and-outs of the massive effort behind the space race. Besides Hanks, there's lots of crossovers between this series and the Apollo 13 feature film.

Excellent movie

Great drama, as well as "feel good" patriotic classic. All around excellent movie, with actors and story providing plenty of engagement, and scenery/effects gluing it all together. Own this one (and watch HBO's "From the Earth to the Moon" miniseries, almost a companion piece to this motion picture)!

Where is Steve Carrell when you need him.
Reviewed by Yipperbore for Cast Away at 2008-03-10 10:57:24
This movie wasn't terrible nor was it as good as it could have been. If they would re-cast this film using Steve Carrell--I'm thinking of his Anchorman roll--this movie would be a real hit. imagine two hours of Steve saying "I love ball" and trying to explain to the flora and fauna how he has a party in his pants and everyone is invited. Good times..
