Seriously Hysterical
Reviewed by KHL for Tropic Thunder at 2008-08-25 12:48:23
You can't ask for much better than Stiller, Black and Downey Jr. in this offbeat and seriously funny comedy (note it finally kicked the Dark Knight out of the #1 spot). Tom Cruise's cameo as slimy movie exec Les Grossman is priceless. Downey Jr. manages to steal the show in a tour-de-force role (acutally, 3 roles perhaps?) as bad-boy Aussie ultra-Method actor (Russel Crowe, anyone?), who goes ultra-character in his African American role, then outwits some bad guys by playing a Japanese samurai type for a too-brief yet funny scene. Stiller and Black are great as usual, as are the rest of the supporting cast. Great opening "commercials" and "trailers" open the film, and tie directly in to the central characters. Funny parody of Hollywood with awesome actors and some great cameos. I can't wait to own this one so I can watch it again! (the gag reel should be good..)

I love this movie and all its 1983 glory. As a kid, I made my mom rent this every time I was sick and now I still watch it when I don't feel well. The acting - acceptable at best. The story - overdone. The scenery - nothing special. I still love it!

Requires more than one viewing
Reviewed by KHL for Vanilla Sky at 2008-03-24 17:36:48
I know that I was a bit perplexed on the first viewing, but after the second or third time I began to really appreciate the complexity that director Crowe uses to build the story and give small and subtle cues about the plot early on. Like or hate Tom Cruise, he is excellent as David, a petulant and shallow person whose life is changed by a sudden event. David must face the person he is and the things he's done, but what else is really going on and why does reality seem to be competing with fantasy in David's mind? Some may find this long, drawn out and boring (see the completely mixed reviews of critics and filmgoers), but if you're willing to be patient, I think it's a highly rewarding and thought provoking film. Diaz as the psycho ex from hell, Cruz as the bubbly new love and Lee as the wisecracking friend all give great performances as well and the soundtrack fits amazingly with the themes and moods of the film.

Schmoke and a pancake?
Reviewed by PeanutButterJellyTime for Austin Powers In Goldmember at 2008-03-11 16:03:12
Myers pulls off tacky humor (as usual) with 24-karat style in Goldmember, as Austin Powers finds himself fighting crime in the 1970s. Dr. Evil's rap sequence is a highlight of this film, as are the bubbly Beyonce Knowles, and the Dutch villain with a taste for his own crispy gold skin.
