Surprisingly Terrific Film from Penn

True story of young man who shuns the ordinary life to hitchhike across the country, gaining life experience and meeting interesting people. Hirsch is superb, Holbrook heartbreaking. Solid direction from Sean Penn.

This is one of Michelle Pfeiffer's and Sean Penn's best movies. Dakota Fanning is great too. Don't miss it!

Wagnerian Celebration of Death
Reviewed by shanahan for Dead Man Walking at 2008-08-11 06:10:42
The notion that this film is some kind of serious meditation on capital punishment is hard to understand. The repeated flashbacks to the murder scene are not only gratuitous (how many times do we need to see a murder/rape to get the message?), they border on a macabre preoccupation with violence and death. The moody rhythm of the film, and the "crescendo" execution scene (another lingering scene that suggests fascination with death), are manipulative and ham-fisted. Give us a sharp, tragic look - like "I Want to Live" - at the death penalty; or a thoughtful meditation on murder and the murderer - there's a gap Hollywood has never filled. Don't give us Wagner.

Quirky Characters, Not Much Plot
Reviewed by KHL for Hugo Pool at 2008-04-15 14:58:10
While this movie has its share of quirky yet strangely likable characters, it plods along pretty slowly and nothing really pulls together until the last half hour. Worth watching once. Its a shame, since there are some great actors here, Sean Penn is an oddball drifter attached to his electric blue Italian loafers, McDowell as the troubled but well meaning dad, and Moriarty as the clueless mom. Highlights are Downey Jr. in his first role after his prison term was over (one can wonder if he's really sober here, or just acting...still its funny), and Milano and Dempsey have terrific chemistry.
