This is the only film I know of that is a dark, feminist, manly romantic comedy. Dark, yet funny for the repeated mock suicide scenes. Feminist because it stresses loving a woman for what's *inside* rather than youth or looks. Manly because even though it's a love story, men seem to love it just as much as women because the portrayal of a young man's struggles with coming of age are so dead-on. (Pun intended.) This is *not* just a "chick flick." Best of all, it's rated PG. They were able to accomplish all that without resorting to foul language, serious violence or unnecessary nudity. I wouldn't call it a "family film" though; however it's a GREAT family film if the youngest members watching are 13 or older. And it can be a *great* discussion starter about the real nature of what "love" between a man and a woman is.

Redford and Wood...magical

I am biased about this movie and This Property is Condemned, because for favorite male and female actors are the stars. Wood is such a kooky, naive character and Redford is suave and experienced. A Pymalion-type movie with big twists in it. "You're Gonna Hear From Me"....this could be many a young starlet's theme song.

I watched this for the first time in high school and immediately fell in love with it for the mock suicide scenes. Bud Cordt is great.
