A strange mixture of cynicism & tenderness that works!
Reviewed by MatthewThompsonDalldorf for World's Greatest Dad at 2012-12-19 16:40:09
Williams puts on a first rate performance in the third film from comedian, Bobcat Goldthwait. Lance (Williams) is a frustrated writer works as a high-school language arts teacher while struggling to get his work published or, at least, some recognition from his students or co-workers. To make matters worse, his teenage son, Kyle (Sabara) is a illiterate, juvenile, misogynistic, vulgar, insufferable jack-#!@%*# who strives to belittle and verbally degrade his father at every opportunity. After Kyle dies via, autoerotic asphyxiation; Lance covers it up with a (strangely articulate) fake suicide note. After the note gets leaked, Kyle is praised as a misunderstood literary genius and Lance's work is finally getting attention he always wanted, but can he live with how he obtained it? A cynical, pitch-black satire on the outside, but with a surprisingly warm and tender center that somehow works.

This Movie Sucks

I hate this film. This is one of the worst I have seen. I saw it 6 years ago when it came out. It was bad then because of the technology/early cgi. If you work in a retail store and someone wants to buy "Robots," give it to them for free - they shouldn't have to pay for it! This is a big fat WOOF!!

A good story of hope
Reviewed by The_MOW for Jakob the Liar at 2010-05-12 20:26:46
"Jakob" (Robin Williams) is a Jew living in a Nazi-occupied Polish ghetto where the residents have lost all hope. One night, he is ordered to report to the officer in charge after being caught outside, allegedly after curfew. While he was in the office, waiting to be repremanded, he overhears a radio report about the advancing Russian troops. When he returns to the neighborhood, he informs his friends what he had heard. However, as the news spread, his story transformed into something else. People began to believe he had a radio hidden in his home as his story began traveling through the grapevine. This is simply a story of hope for those oppressed such as the Jews during the Nazi occupation so many decades ago. And it is done very well. Let me say that this movie is not a happy story. Even the ending is shadowed by sadness, though it does have a touch of happiness. Williams is very good in this film. He made his character compassionate to those in his neighborhood. As he told the stories, which were just stories to keep the Jews hopes up, you began to believe them just as much as those forced into the same situation as he was in the story. He was very believeable as he told his fictional news. In fact, there were many good performances from the rest of the cast. You could actually feel the emotion from the entire cast. It was one of the most believeable performances from an entire cast that I've seen in a long time. One thing you will notice is the lack of light, and color. You get lots of gray, black and white in clothing, as well as the walls (interior and exterior). This helps set the mood perfectly if you ask me. The only time I can recall any color was a shot of the Nazi flag. There is also a lack of happy music in the film. There is one scene between Williams and the young girl (Hannah Taylor Gordon) that is short, but it is a happy scene with fun music. Wardrobes are very accurate in this film. The Jews clothing look worn, and very dirty. They look as if they didn't wash their clothing in some time. The Nazi uniforms are also quite accurate in their appearance. The violence is fairly mild in this film. There is a little blood, far less than you would expect. The Nazi soldiers use machine guns against the Jews, but there is little to no blood splatter as they are apparently struck. There is also little to no action. Many of the scenes drag on, but many drag at an appropriate pace that works well. To parents, I would suggest that you avoid this one if you have young children. If you have kids who are able to understand the plot, then watch it with them.

Exciting, Alive and Vibrant

This is the only uncut version of Shakespeare's play committed to film. As such, it is a relief to find it done so well. While not all of the star-studded cast fit too easily (Jack Lemmon is a bit ill-at-ease in a brief bit), but others fare quite well (Heston, Crystal). Excellent production design, and great performances from Branagh, Winslet, Jacobi and Christie. If you fear the 4 hour running time, the Gibson version is fine. But if you want great cinema, this is the best version.

Something's Rotten

FOUR BONES? Have you been at the dognip? This thing is ghastly! Hamlet swinging on a chandelier across the room in the final scene? Give me a break - or a poison-tipped sword. This is like a Corman send-up of Shakespeare, without any of the humor. See Mel Gibson do his wired Prince, Nicol Williamson do his haunted Prince. (Skip Olivier's self-aggrandizing Prince-as-Young-Werther.) But stay away from this bizarrely inadvertent parody: Prince-as-Doug-Fairbanks.

Insomnia
Reviewed by Sharkbait for Insomnia at 2009-04-18 12:34:13
'Insomnia' may be the least impressive of director Christopher Nolan's films (admittedly, I haven't seen his debut film, 'Following'), but the fact that it is directed by Nolan means that it is still a minor masterpiece. With the exception of 'The Dark Knight', it is the most straightforward Nolan film, with the most linear storytelling. It's a much more standard thriller than 'Memento', but it is beautifully shot and tautly told by Nolan. To date, this may be the last truly great performance that Al Pacino has given. And Robin Williams is also almost unexpectedly excellent; with the one-two punch of 'Insomnia' and 'One Hour Photo', he certainly cornered the market on "creepy". I can't wait to see Williams walk on the dark side again.

Style Over Substance
Reviewed by Sharkbait for Robots at 2009-03-06 20:44:40
It's obvious they started this movie with the visual ideas (as they state they did in the DVD extras). They came up with this world--which is absolutely, mind-bogglingly, beautifully rendered in the film--and then hung a paper-thin plot on it. The voice cast is pretty good (minus Halle Berry, who is just bland), but the visuals definitely stick with you longer than any of the story elements.

Entertaining for kids and adults

My six year old daughter was pretty scared the first time she saw the dinosaur in this movie but everything turned out fine and she has watched this at least 50 times now. Stiller as "Larry" and Owen Wilson as the miniature cowboy are a crack up in their straight-faced take of these ridiculous roles. Enjoyable pretty much from beginning to end even after the 25th viewing.
