This is a valiant effort at a modern-day version of the Dickens classic, though I've only read half the novel, the part I have read is indeed very similar to the story line in this film--more than just the "basic story line." However Charles Dickens actually wrote two endings to his famous novel, one happier than the other. Now I'm compelled to go read the edition I have, which contains both endings. I can't wait!

Star-studded Caper That Works
Reviewed by criddic2 for The Score at 2010-09-26 04:28:19
Entertaining heist caper from director Frank Oz. It features a solid De Niro being slightly upstaged by con-artist Edward Norton, an efficient pacing and Brando in his final screen role.

Totally Immoral, But You Gotta Luv It!
Reviewed by Lexuses71 for Machete at 2010-09-12 13:16:30
Saw it yesterday, it was off the chain! This is pure Robert Rodriguez at his best. We dug it, especially when Danny Trejo says (deadpan) to Alba "Machete don't text"! Yup, over the top violence, nudity, mean azz characters, but a more interesting plot that I expected. You have to watch this film with a certain 'detachment',knowing full well the 'shock & awe" factor will be high. Really glad at 66 Danny is getting his props. Fits him like a glove. Great cast, Fehey, DiNiro & Johnson were total pricks & pricelessly chewing scenery. Cheech Marin was a hoot. Michelle Rodriguez was her usual bad azz self (does she ever play non-bad azz types?) looking good. Even Lindsey didn't bother me for a change with the shot and mostly nude screentime she had. The heck with the reviewers who can't hang, go see this film.

A wonderful piece of story-telling.

Although it takes a great deal of patience to watch this slow-paced (and unusually long) movie, it still manages to provide lavish entertainment around every corner. Minnelli's and De Niro's performances are both amazing, and I'm shocked that they got snubbed at the Oscars.

Poor, but entertaining.
Reviewed by NWRdr4 for Hide and Seek at 2010-01-31 15:55:31
A thriller largely lacking in substance (due to its sometimes weak script, et al.), but Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning give surprisingly good performances. I would never claim that it's a great movie, but it's still a highly enjoyable one.

Vastly Overrated Fantasy About Vietnam
Reviewed by shanahan for The Deer Hunter at 2009-12-18 15:42:40
While this film has some beautiful moments - mostly in the Polish community of the small Pennsylvania town - it is a vastly overrated melodrama. No one involved in the film had any experience in the Vietnam War, so there are patent misrepresentations - the bamboo cage torture, for instance, and the Russian roulette game. And it hinges on a pseudo-spiritual, but actually hoked-up notion about "one clean shot" that means . . . well, nothing. (There is also a scene in which all the Asians seem to be a mindless, hysterical mass - something sensitive viewers will find offensive.) It's sad that such talented performers gave their all to such a study in Wagnerian overkill, but their efforts don't come anywhere near redeeming the film.

Unexpected Surprises
Reviewed by Fantasea for Stardust at 2009-12-12 16:01:55
Sometimes you go to a movie with high expectations and sometimes not really knowing what to expect. "Stardust" was one of the latter. What a surprise! It built up slowly and delivered on so many levels. So what type of film is "Stardust"? A coming of age, a romance, an epic adventure, a swashbuckler, a comedy, a fantasy, and a (flying, irreverent, cross-dressing) pirate movie; yes it's all of that!! What a way to escape for two hours. Everyone in the cast gave satisfying performances, many were stand out performances: with a wickedly over the top evil Witch by Ms. Pfeiffer and a flying high scene stealing turn by Mr. De Niro as Captain Shakespeare. Treat yourself. See "Stardust", and be surprised.

The Sheepish Shepherd
Reviewed by www.BraidedThreads.blogspot.com for The Good Shepherd at 2008-10-09 11:54:27
http://braidedthreads.blogspot.com/2008/10/sheepish-shepherd.html It struck me how little the main character (played by Matt Damon) actually does in this movie. He never makes any active choices - when he is directing things for the CIA, he announces, and others carry out his decisions. He is pretty blank as a character. He does make a couple of choices with regard to his son, though. But he also doesn't choose to deter his son beyond his vague suggestions about life in the CIA. Most other decisions are made for him and he follows orders when he is not giving orders. He does make the choice to turn around in the hallway and go back to the Skull and Bones innitiation. He chooses that life. He does what is expected of him. He has sex when he is dragged into it, he gets married when the girl getspregnant, he goes overseas when asked.

Gilliam is the king of the "love em or hate em" filmmakers, but Brazil is his best-loved film, and there's a reason. It's visionary, weird, sad, shocking, funny, and dark - plus De Niro plays a terrorist plumber. Might be my favorite movie ever.
