With Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hitting theaters like a urine-filled water balloon, the question of whether or not video games should EVER be turned into films must once again be raised. Sure, there have been some moments of entertainment in the Resident Evil franchise but with films like Hitman, Doom, and Max Payne failing to produce anything that resembles the thrills of playing the games on which they were based, why do we continue to bother? Probably because the fact is that some of the best storytelling of the last few years has occurred in the world of Sony and Microsoft. If you're not playing the more acclaimed game titles of 2010, you're really missing out. In fact, the year to date in gaming - with incredible titles like God of War III, Bioshock 2, Alan Wake, Heavy Rain, Red Dead Redemption – has more than blown away what’s available at the multiplex when it comes to not just the visceral entertainment we should expect from gaming but also in basic storytelling as well. As game writing continues to improve, Hollywood is going to keep calling and we'd like to offer some advice for when they do. Just keep them away from Uwe Boll.

First, a note: After much consideration, all war games have been excluded. Part of the reason that the Modern Warfare and Bad Company games work as well as they do is the you-are-there aesthetic that puts the player behind enemy lines and that's not the kind of storytelling that translates well to film. Could there be a great COD movie? Possibly, but considering it's the multiplayer element that has truly made these games so insanely popular and not their single-player campaigns, they seem like bad fits. Also, one of the best games of last year, Batman: Arkham Asylum, would probably make a better superhero movie than nearly any released since The Dark Knight, but Nolan's got that franchise under control. Let's not mess with it.

With one of the worst big budget scripts in years, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is the kind of laughable turd that only works if you see it in an empty theater and are allowed to heckle the film Mystery Science Theater-style. Otherwise, make sure you’re caffeinated because there hasn’t been this boring a Memorial Day tentpole since…well, ever. It is

It pains me to say that the latest zombie film by one of my personal icons, George A. Romero, simply doesn’t work. It’s his most half-baked, poorly constructed films in year, a step down after the semi-resurgence of his Dead franchise with Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead. Easily the worst of the now-six-film series that includes

With the reunion of the great director James Ivory with star Anthony Hopkins, who appeared in the director’s Howards End and The Remains of the Day, The City of Your Final Destination starts off with the promise of the kind of well-acted human drama that they don’t make that often any more, even on the arthouse scene. Add great

The first film based on the HBO show Sex and the City was a deeply flawed affair that misguidedly reveled in the excess of fancy shoes and high fashion instead of finding anything remotely relatable about its iconic characters. Somehow, I held out hope that writer/director Michael Patrick King and the rest of his talented team would rekindle the magic of

In the pantheon of Saturday Night Live sketches turned feature films, there is the preeminent The Blues Brothers, the admirable Wayne's World, and then the ever-increasing junk pile, a category to which the newest SNL offering MacGruber falls. Not since 2000's pitiful The Ladies Man has anyone attempted to sail the murky waters of turning short sketches into 90

He may be still relatively unknown to American audiences, but Francois Ozon is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today, always delivering something worth talking about even if not all of his films come together. If you consider yourself an aficionado of French film in any way and have yet to see Under the Sand, 8 Women, or

Last year was a landmark one in the medium of animation. Diverse films like Coraline, Up, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and The Princess and the Frog made a clear statement that family films need not merely serve as commercials for tie-in products, video games, and amusement parks. The pattern of quality mainstream animation continued into early 2010

With Iron Man 2 kicking off the summer season in expected blockbuster fashion, there’s already buzz about a third film and what can be expected. There may be a cavalcade of Marvel Universe films on the horizon – Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers – but Robert Downey Jr. recently confirmed to MTV News, just before the Iron

You don’t need a license to become a parent and there’s no guidebook to the surprising complexities of being both a good father and living in a cruel world. If you did need a license, Lenny (Ronald Bronstein), the lead of the strong new dramedy Daddy Longlegs (known internationally as Go Get Some Rosemary and Lenny & the Kids), probably wouldn’t have gotten ...Read More
