True Grit, relegated to second place for two weeks in a row, finally pulled ahead of Little Fockers, taking the top spot and earning $15 million for its efforts, putting the Coen Brothers western at $110 million in 3 weeks. Fockers fell to 2nd place with $13.8 million, still edging out Grit in overall earnings with $123.9 million during the same time span. But leave it to new release Season of the Witch to place 3rd, making $10.7 million. While Grit has earned near universal acclaim, Fockers has suffered poor reviews with audiences and critics, while the supernatural thriller starring Nicholas Cage has gotten downright condemnation from critics, earning it the award for "Worst Movie of 2011" with almost all of 2011 still to go. Audience reaction has been mixed.
Tron: Legacy continues to perform strongly despite entering 4th place, making $9.8 million, but even this was overshadowed by the continued impressive performance of Black Swan. Swan rose to 5th place from 9th, earning $8.3 million … less than it did last week, but at $61.4 million over six weeks, Darren Aronofsky's ballet thriller has earned nearly quadruple its budget. Entering its third week (but first in wide release), Country Strong, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, continues the trend of the newest films in release, earning mixed reviews from audiences and scorn from critics. But the $7.3 million it earned was still enough to land it in 6th place. Not to be outdone, The Fighter earned $7 million to stay in 7th; perhaps not as impressive a performance as Swan, but at $57.8 million overall it has still earned nearly as much, and for a film that cost $10 million more to make has managed to do admirably in its fifth week.
