Missed Opportunities: Not So Marvelous Films from the Pages of Marvel Comics
June 12, 2008

This was originally supposed to be a compilation of the best adaptations of Marvel Comics. But when we realized the list would be limited to Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and Iron Man, we felt that would be just a bit too obvious. So, we here at MovieRetriever.com instead present the 10 more miserable excuses of films based on material originating from Marvel Comics. Read on true believers….

  • X-Men: The Last Stand – There are many reasons this film is on our list, but the biggest of them all is director Brett Ratner. The film breezily destroys everything that Bryan Singer accomplished in the first two X-Men films. A disappointing third installment to say the least.
  • Spider-Man 3 – We’ve complained about this one before but it still amazes us that Sam Raimi managed to tarnish his own legacy by cramming too many ideas into one feebly held together movie. We’ll give Sam the benefit of the doubt and look for better results his next time out but we expected so much more.
  • Ang Lee’s Hulk – Nick Nolte and killer poodles? This isn’t a comedy? Really?
  • Men in Black 2 – Was there a reason other than product placement for this film to exist? Everyone seems bored and you will be too after about ten minutes.
  • Ghost Rider – We could have bought Nicolas Cage as a brooding agent of the Devil about five years before this film was made. It’s nothing more than a cookie-cutter super hero movie that doesn’t offer anything fresh or exciting.
  • Daredevil – Making Daredevil jump around like he was Spidey was a big mistake. Needed to be darker and less cartoonish.
  • Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer – Would you believe that almost fifteen minutes go by in this film before an actual super hero shows up to do something a super hero might actually do? It starts with a wedding for cryin’ out loud! Don’t they know who their audience is?
  • Captain America (1989) – Notable if only for the fact that J.D. Salinger’s son plays the man in the red white and blue tights. An early example of everything that can be done wrong when a comic book is brought to the big screen.
  • The Punisher (2004) – A revenge fantasy without any real cathartic revenge being dished out. Give us the Kill Bill films over this mess any day.
  • Blade: Trinity – We still have no idea what was going on in this movie. Who exactly was Blade fighting? Was it the guy from Prison Break or the chick from those Christopher Guest films. We’re at a loss.

It's your guide to everything about movies, from upcoming releases, to movies in theaters and movies on DVD.
