Love Guru to Host MTV Movie Awards; Vern Troyer to Host Lunch Crowd at Denny's
April 24, 2008

In theory, we’re big fans of the MTV Movie Awards. We love their non-traditional categories (like their glorious life-time achievement awards for Clint Howard and Chewbacca), their tradition of movie spoofs (remember when they hired the cast of Rushmore to act out their best picture nominees?), odd musical acts (like the Ramones performing a pre-show best song medley), and irreverent tone, but their award shows for the past few years have been pathetic. 2006 was hosted by the mannequin-esque Jessica Alba, and we don’t mean “mannequin-esque” in a good Kim Cattrall/Meshach Taylor kind of way. The opening movie parody literally had Topher Grace threatening to spray Flava Flav with a Super-Soaker full of urine – not exactly up to the level of the Wes Anderson parodies, eh? And while 2007 did have Sarah Silverman as the host – we’re big fans, even though Jesus Is Magic is a pretty poorly directed concert film – the whole show was awkward as hell, their viral video contest winner parodied United 93 of all movies (big laughs there), and there was a point where Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes were literally tricked into starring in an Orbit gum commercial. Oh, Movie Awards, how the mighty have fallen.

Possibly in a move to make the telecast less, um… terrible, MTV has announced that Mike Myers is scheduled to host this year’s live awards show on June 1. (If you’re wondering, the voting for this year’s nominees hasn’t begun yet.)

So, how do we feel about their host choice? In a word – conflicted. Myers has done some great stuff in his career (we love So I Married an Axe Murderer) and he did a solid job hosting the 1997 Movie Awards (we recall a wacky Riverdance bit), but this is obviously just tied to a promotional push for Myers’ new summer movie, The Love Guru, and, to be frank, Lothar of the Hill People has started to wear on our last nerves lately. Maybe it was the underwhelming last Austin Powers movie, or perhaps that the so-so Love Guru trailer really brought home that Myers should be Al Gore’s favorite comedian (because he just LOVES to recycle his jokes), but we’re not nearly as excited to see Mike as we would’ve been back in the heady Wayne and Garth days. We’re more worried about Mark Burnett returning to produce the award show, since he’s responsible for the past few years of terrible telecasts.

Who knows? Maybe he’ll knock it out of the park. Provided that he leaves Alba, his Love Guru co-star, at home. Dear lord, she was a bad host.
