The 82nd Annual Academy Award Nominations Have Been Announced!
Posted by Turk182 in Awards Watch

The 82nd annual Academy Award nominations were announced earlier today (see the clip below for the announcement), and, per usual, there's a couple things that might make you shake your head in disbelief. The thing everyone will be talking about is the expansion of the Best Picture category to 10 films. (See our piece on What if the 10 Nominee Rule Had Been Adopted Back in 2000? for a look at what films would or should have been nominated in previous years.)

It was nice to see District 9 get some attention. But, the abundance of nominations for Avatar have got to have you wondering, did I see the same movie? Good movie, entertaining sure, but Best Picture quality? Finally, where is the love for Star Trek as Best Picture? The Blind Side, really?

The list of nominees are below, along with our quick immediate reactions to the nominations.

**********

BEST PICTURE
Avatar
The Blind Side
District 9
An Education
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
A Serious Man
Up
Up in the Air

Immediate Reaction: This is a pretty good collection of films. District 9 getting nominated is just about the best thing ever. But, The Blind Side? Probably could have swapped that or Avatar for Star Trek (of course that could be the Trekker in me trying to get out).

BEST ACTOR
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker

Immediate Reaction: They got this right on. But, maybe Swapping Sam Rockwell and his performance in Moon for Morgan Freeman might have made us happier.

BEST ACTRESS
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Saphhire
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia

Immediate Reaction:
Abbie Cornish probably should have gotten some love for her work in Bright Star but what are you gonna do?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Matt Damon, Invictus
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds

Immediate Reaction: If Christoph Waltz doesn’t win this award, well, then I just don’t know what I’ll do. So there.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Penelope Cruz, Nine
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Mo’Nique, Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire

Immediate Reaction: How does Vera Farmiga not win this award? Well, Anna Kendrick will probably cancel her and then there’s Mo’Nique.

BEST DIRECTOR
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
James Cameron, Avatar
Lee Daniels, Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds

Immediate Reaction:
At least The Blind Side didn’t pick up a nomination here too.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
The Hurt Locker, Mark Boal
Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino
The Messenger, Alessandro Camon and Oren Moverman
A Serious Man, Joel Coen and Ethan Coen
Up, Bob Peterson, Pete Docter, and Thomas McCarthy

Immediate Reaction: We’re suckers for the Coens and Pixar, but this could be the year of The Hurt Locker.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Disctrict 9, Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell
An Education, Nick Hornby
In the Loop, Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci, and Tony Roche
Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire, Geoffrey Fletcher
Up in the Air, Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner

Immediate Reaction: Yay! More District 9 love. It’s nice to see intelligent science fiction.

BEST ANIMATED FILM
Coraline
The Fantastic Mr. Fox

The Princess and the Frog
The Secret of Kells
Up

Immediate Reaction: Up was pretty awesome, but Coraline wins this one hands down (plus, Up is nominated in that other category).

I don't think it necessarily deserved a Best Picture nom. But I would have been much less surprised to see it than The Blind Side. Color me shocked.
